A five-day web 2.0 training was conducted from May 23-27, 2011 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The training was organized by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA).

Participants came from Government offices, Universities, the United Nations, Non-Governmental and International Organizations with various areas of specialization.

The training began with introductions from each trainee. Along with the introduction, each of the trainees was requested to share their expectations from the training.

The training covered the following modules:

  • Introduction to Web 2.0
  • Selective access to information: Advanced search, Google Alerts, RSS
  • Remote collaboration
  • Online mapping
  • VoiP
  • Micro-blogging and blogging
  • Professional and corporate social networking (LinkedIn and Facebook)
  • Introduction to iMARK module “Web 2.0  and social media for development”

Lots of research is conducted in many universities and organizations but it is not extensively communicated or shared.  This is where the learning opportunity enabled the participants to socialize, network, collaborate, communicate and share knowledge among themselves and for their organizations. In addition, it created stronger linkage and collaboration between different organizations.

At the closing, participants explained that the training was very empowering – helping them to create and share content and collaborate in the production and dissemination of information.

Many outputs from the training are online, examples include:
